During the horrific forest fire that tore through numerous buildings and homes in the Branchflower Road area there was a small but remarkable miracle. A grey/black cat named Smokey managed to survive in the very centre of the turmoil and devastation. In pain and alone Smokey survived for 16 days trapped in a barn escaping with severe burns on his paws, face and ears.
Smokey belonged to Ernie and Carlene Krick, who lost absolutely everything in the fire. When they discovered their beloved cat had survived, they were ecstatic. Smokey was immediately taken to the veterinarian Dr. Jim Clark for treatment. Disfigured with burns, he survived and continued to live with the Krick family. Smokey is an incredible story of survival.
