Jim Denvir was among a group of St. Joseph’s parishioners who helped in the community, both in and outside of the congregation. At first, they collected food, storing it in their own homes to deliver to local people in need. The group evolved into a chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a lay Catholic organization working towards a more just society. Then services expanded from providing food and clothing to household goods and furniture. Eventually a co-ordinated effort of various church and community groups led to the founding of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund.
