“Knowledge for the People” was written by Father Jimmy Tompkins and published in 1921. Some 5000 copies of this pamphlet were circulated in Nova Scotia. With unemployment driving young people to leave the province, Tompkins believed that schools and universities needed to prepare people for the modern world. He also felt that education should not just enrich individuals but improve life for the community. He strongly believed in adult education through extension programs for people from all walks of life.
