Sherbrien and Cathedral Heights co-ops were the first to build, with the Lakedale co-op starting soon after. Once they became incorporated, they needed building permits. These weren’t so easy to get, as some town councillors opposed this “co-op housing thing,” as noted in the book The Light from One Candle. Yet once a councillor was shown the high-quality construction at the Lindsay co-op, the permits were granted.
