The ISA played an active role in promoting the social justice activities of the Catholic Church. The papal encyclicals of the day, letters from the Pope directing the clergy to work toward the common good, were emphasizing the needs of working people. There was a strong connection between the ISA and St. Francis Xavier University, especially among those involved in the Antigonish Movement founded by its Extension Department. Father Coady would speak at the ISA in 1951, continuing to encourage social justice through education and co-operation.
