Carved by the Sea: Heritage Places of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland
Explore the history of Bay Roberts as a 20th century commercial town. With input from community members, the exhibit highlights historically significant sites, while showcasing lesser-known stories from local neighbourhoods. The community of Bay Roberts is located on the western shore of Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Today, it is home to about 5,300 people and serves as a commercial hub in Conception Bay. It continues to be home to many long-term residents who keep alive the folklore and oral history of the town.
This exhibit combines recent and archival photographs from community members and town collections with written and audio memories representing a variety of historic spaces in Bay Roberts. Some of these places are well known community landmarks that tell of the town’s long history, and which tie the present to the earliest days of settlement. Other places are less well-known. Together, they reflect neighbourhood oral traditions, local folklore and history, and speak to the heritage of Bay Roberts as an early to mid twentieth-century commercial centre.
This exhibition was a partnership between Heritage NL and the Town of Bay Roberts. Exhibition produced by Terra Barrett, Dale Jarvis, and Natalie Dignam, Heritage NL.
