Roadside Tourist Camp, Norland

Maryboro Lodge: The Fenelon Museum Collection
Date: 1930s
Roadside “tourist camps” began to appear in northwestern Kawartha Lakes during the 1920s and 1930s. Sometimes called “motor camps,” they were informal affairs – often consisting of little more than an open field and a fire pit. This example, overlooking Shadow Lake near Norland, welcomed motorists venturing north or south along the future Highway 35.
