Making Road Trips Faster and Smoother: An Ontario Department of Highways Crew Spreads Mulch Pavement on Highway 46 near Lorneville

Date: 1952
In 1914, a gentleman named George H. Payne wrote a letter to the editor of the Lindsay Post urging municipalities to purchase a grader for use on every two miles of road. “As ruts form in the road from time to time during the summer, the grader should be driven along in order to keep the road smooth,” Payne pointed out. By 1952, mechanical graders were spreading mulch pavement on to Highway 46 near Lorneville, some 20 kilometres southwest of Kirkfield.
