Food Influences

Food has played an important role in the story of survival for immigrant communities. Many immigrants are usually interested in running their own food businesses, especially because most of them can cook and don’t need special training or certifications to make their favourite dishes from home. Selling this food to other members who share their cultural background becomes a way to express their culture, create a shared community, and grow their wealth.

The whole reason why people were so in love with the food was because it was very affordable. And that’s what families were looking for at the time. There was a whole bunch of variety, really affordable, fast [and high quality].

Food holds a special place in Scarborough’s multicultural landscape. Food historians have highlighted how food in Scarborough represents the success of multiculturalism. Food isn’t just about eating; it’s a way of connecting, building a community, and preserving cultural heritage.

At the core of Scarborough’s diverse community is food. Food is the one thing we all really need to survive in tough times, and the thing that brings us all together in the good times.
