Hi, I’m Lisa Uyeda, Collections Manager at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. Welcome to the vault. Here I have with me an item from the Hide Hyodo Shimizu collection.

In May 1936, four delegates from the Japanese-Canadian Citizens League traveled to Ottawa to speak to the Special Committee on Elections and Franchise Acts in an effort to gain the federal franchise.

The four delegates were Dr. E. Banno, a dentist; Ms. Hide Hyodo, a school teacher; Mr. Minoru Kobayashi, a life insurance agent; and Dr. S. Hayakawa, a university professor.

The delegation was unsuccessful in their attempt, but made significant strides in bringing attention to the inequality faced by Asian-Canadians. Hide created this scrapbook which documents their journey.
