This pitcher, made in 1917 by Private George Brown of the 49th Canadians, was presented to John Edward Bernard Seely by Archibald Cameron Macdonell as a gift for Seely’s marriage. Macdonell served in both the South African or Boer War and the First World War where he was wounded in 1916 and received numerous decorations for bravery including the French Croix de Guerre. Seely was a British officer and a sitting member of the British Parliament who was also the Commanding Officer of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade at the time of his marriage to Evelyn Murray in July 1917.
