aluminum, 11.5 x 3.7 cm, Second World War
These candlesticks are souvenirs from the ammunition manufacturing undertaken at the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec during the Second World War. Many factories across Canada were re-purposed to produce vehicles, weapons and ammunition. These candlesticks belonged to Elphège Langlois and his wife, Lorida Rollande Landry. During the Second World War, Landry worked in the munitions division inspecting fuses and Langlois was a machinist and lathe operator.
