Men filling a silo with harvested corn, mid-1900s. Corn bale fermentation occurs when the starches in the kernels break down. Fermented forage assists cows with digestion. Dairy cows are given a specially formulated diet which consists of a digestible source of fibre, carbohydrates, and protein. Cattle feed may include grass, soybean, vitamins, minerals and fats such as vegetable oil and tallow in addition to the fermented forage. The right feed mixture encourages better milk production in dairy herds and ensures happy cows.
