The Auditorium’s twin

In the city of Shawinigan, Québec is a building that strangely resembles the Verdun Auditorium. Built in 1937, so one year before Verdun’s, this building housed for a long time an arena dedicated for the city’s sports activities. These two auditoriums show the influence of the Art Deco movement and both have symmetrical front façades. This arena enabled the city of Shawinigan to take its place on the provincial hockey scene, thanks to the Shawinigan Cataractes, a team in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League, which played on this rink up until 2008. The building changed names in 1994 to become Aréna Jacques-Plante, in honour of the famous Montreal Canadiens’ goaltender, born in the city of Shawinigan. Today, the building houses Québec government offices.
