In 1978, the Verdun Auditorium welcomed the best midget AAA hockey teams in Canada within the Wrigley Tournament. It was the most highly coveted minor hockey tournament for 16 and 17-year-olds. This major tournament was their first chance to distinguish themselves in the professional hockey world. The Wrigley Tournament provided the winning team with the opportunity to represent Canada during a tour of friendly matches against various teams from the former USSR. At the 1978 edition in Verdun, Les Couillard of Sainte-Foy, Québec, won the championship and got to play in the former Czechoslovakia.
