Joseph Papin I’s house

This photo shows a small, white wooden houses located on the edge of the St. Lawrence River. Next to it, a stone cross was erected to indicate the location of the first original Contrecœur church.

This house was inhabited by Joseph Papin I upon his arrival in Contrecœur around 1883. Located close to the Chaput mill, it is in this home, now gone, where he would have begun handcrafting shoes.  The stone cross was erected around 1940 to commemorate the location of the first original Contrecœur church.
