The Liberal Party of Quebec had been in power since the 1960 election. Two years later, Premier Jean Lesage called an early election that focused on the nationalization of electricity. René Lévesque, then a minister in the Lesage government, was charged with carrying out the move to state ownership of this important economic sector.
