Sister Jeanne d’Arc Larouche: There was a narrow path up to the house, the rest was all garden. We weeded, we harvested, but we did not eat any of it. We had gooseberries, green ones, there were black ones and red ones too. We gathered those to make jelly for the sick. Some people, back then, had tuberculosis, and we made that for them, but we did not taste any of it.

There were dwarf apples. We did not eat those either. We used them to make jellies and jams. There were small red prunes. I remember that we ate some of those, they were good. And there were raspberries up on the cape, and blueberries. That’s before the buildings went up. Everything that’s in rows and lawn today had not been cleared back then.
