All fishers developed their own techniques and tools. In this photograph, for example, a guide is being used to hold a pole in place. The hammerer on the left has placed one of his feet on the guide to prevent it from moving. This technique dispensed with the need to hire a worker simply to hold the poles in place while other men drove them into the ground.
