Sea Serpent

Painting of two women on the bank of a winding river. They are surprized to see a large sea serpent swimming in the water as they do their washing. A hunter in the background watches the scene, which dates from the 1800s.

The silver eel seems to have provided the inspiration for the sea serpent shown in this painting. Until the 1950s, the snake of original sin represented a culture of evil whose existence was widely proclaimed by the Church.
