Snowshoes

When we stop at a camp to spend the night, we leave our snowshoes (ᐊᓵᒥᒡ) standing upright in the snow beside the door. It is easy then to find them if it snows heavily during the night. The piece of wood in front of the snowshoes is a hand carved wooden snow shovel or akwaaskupaan (ᐊᐧᑳᔅᑯᐹᓐ). It is an important tool to carry on a hunting/walking trip in winter.
