The local Patriot deputy, Joseph-Narcisse Cardinal, had the soul of a leader and contributed to the July 1837 founding of l’Union patriotique de Châteauguay, the local counterpart of the Comité central et permanent de Montréal. The organization of a parallel government was driven by the unconstitutional coercion of British colonial authorities. The county of La Prairie, which included Châteauguay, joined the Confederation of Six Counties at a major convention at the end of October 1837.
