Branwen Patenaude was born of British parents in Shanghai, China, where she and her brothers lived a sheltered childhood. The family moved to West Vancouver in 1941, and then later to the Cariboo, where Branwen met her future husband Wilfred H. Patenaude. They married in Ashcroft in 1947 and moved to Quesnel in 1960 with their two children, Anne and David Honor. There, Branwen joined the Quesnel Museum as a volunteer and published eight books on Cariboo history, key sources on 19th and 20th century pioneer life in the Cariboo.
