Leisure Time
Tom Tull Collection
Today, as in the past, leisure time in Lumby is about being together as a community. When they weren’t working, our pioneer families got together with friends, neighbors and relatives to socialize. Some of the early social organizations were the Lumby May Queen, Brownies and Guides.
The Lumby Women’s Institute sponsored the May Queen program. The first May Queen, Rhea Quesnel was crowned in 1913. The program was suspended for a number of years due to the outbreak of war.
In May 1923 the May Queen program was reinstated and Linda Jackson was named May Queen. Unfortunately, Miss Jackson contracted pneumonia and died a few months later.
