First School Bus

Lumby’s early school bus looked quite a bit more rustic than today’s school bus.

The first school bus was actually a flat deck truck with a wooden canopy the children called the “chicken coop”.  There were benches down each side for the children to sit on.  After the morning run to school, the driver would remove the “chicken coop” and head to the bush for a load of firewood, making sure he was back in time to take the children safely home after school.
