Fishing
Charlie Catt Collection
The pioneers who settled in Lumby enjoyed fishing in the local creeks, especially when the salmon returned to spawn. At the height of spawning season, the creeks were so full of fish there seemed to be more fish than water!
Lumby’s blacksmith, Rod Chisholm would made three-pronged spears out of hay forks to spear the salmon. The fish were delicious to eat and the pioneers soon learned to preserve the fish by salting and canning.
A young man fishing for salmon in the early days of Lumby could expect to catch salmon that weighed at least 15 pounds.
