Bessette Estate 1892

A two story wooden house is in the center of a pioneer homestead. The homestead is surrounded by marshy grass and shrubs. There are wooden fences around the house. A barn and corrals are in the background. Beyond the barn is a large hay field.

Pierre Bessette came to Lumby around 1875 and is said to be the founding father of Lumby. In 1877, Pierre pre-empted land east of the Village of Lumby.

By 1890, the Bessette farm was comprised of over one thousand acres in hay and boasted one hundred head of beef cattle.

Today, Lumby’s Industrial Park occupies the land where the Bessette farm house once stood.
