Role of Women
Maureen Thompson Collection
Going into Lumby with the horse and carriage was a highlight for pioneer women. A horse pulling a carriage while walking could travel 3 or 4 miles an hour!
Life was hard for women. They often felt isolated and suffered many hardships. Women were the main caregivers for the family, providing day-to-day necessities as well as medical care. They managed the home, providing food and clothing for the family. Many women worked side by side with the men clearing land and farming.
