Logging Trucks
Verle Moore Collection
As the timber close to rivers and lakes became scarce, loggers reached further into the mountains for harvestable timber. Getting the logs to the valley sawmills was a real problem. At first, horses, oxen and sometimes steam-powered donkeys were used, but none of these methods really solved the problem. The solution came in the 1920’s with the introduction of logging trucks. The first logging trucks were primitive, dangerous and downright uncomfortable. Many didn’t have brakes or any way to protect the driver if the load shifted.
