Supporting Veterans
John Fawcett Collection
The Lumby Legion Branch 167 was established in 1941 by a group of World War 1 veterans. The first president was Raymond Ward and the group met at various locations including the old livery stable, Catholic Parish Hall and the Ormsby Hall.
When the soldiers came home from World War II in 1946, there was a call to support the needs of the returning veterans. The Lumby Building Society was formed to construct a building for veterans to meet and socialize. Volunteers Pat Duke, Ernie Pierce, Father Frank Harrison, Percy Greaves, Jack Nihara and Wilfred Treen built the first hall for $20,000.00.
In 1970, through the sale of debentures (when a person loans money to a project based only on good faith the loan will be repaid), donations and many hours of volunteer labour, an addition was made to the original building. Today, the Lumby Legion building is an important landmark in downtown Lumby.
