1908 Village of Lumby
Lumby Historians Collection
In 1893, Lumby was a small isolated frontier settlement. By 1908, the Village had grown to 18 buildings: two hotels, a boarding house, two blacksmith shops, a general store, a post office and 11 homes.
As the town grew, so did the need for goods and services.
Mail and supplies were brought from Vernon by horse and wagon in the summer and sleigh in the winter. Twice a week Johnny Genier Sr. brought supplies from Vernon to Lumby. It was a long way to travel (16 miles or 25 kilometers) and the trip took almost all day! In 1912, Mr. Genier bought a two-cylinder gas wagon that meant he could deliver goods to Lumby every day. Except Sunday of course!
