Young Maude and Alice Abbott, 1873

Alice, on the right, has light hair, also tied behind her head. They are sitting behind an arrangement of flowers, two hats and three rocks on the lawn.

Maude and Alice’s mother, Elizabeth Bayley Abbott (1842-1869), died of tuberculosis when little Maude was only seven months old. Maude and her older sister, Alice (1867-1934), were then adopted by their grandmother, Frances Mary Smith. This photo was taken in 1873.
