Elmbank
Postcard of Maude E. Abbott’s house, Elmbank, 1938. In September 1939, Maude Abbott took a new lodger into the family home: J. H. Bell, manager of the St. Andrews carding mill. He said that the atmosphere in the house was bleak when he arrived:
“I did my best to change the sad atmosphere which they told me had been in the house since her sister died. … I have the happiest recollection of my stay at Elmbank … Dr. Abbott was as modest as she was great. ”
