The Lord Stanley Gold Medal, 1890 (front)

The Lord Stanley Gold Medal awarded to Maude Abbott in 1890 for academic achievement, particularly in Greek, when she graduated from McGill University’s Faculty of Arts. The prestigious gold medal rests on a base of granite from Mont Johnson (Mont Saint-Grégoire). The front of the medal shows the overlapping profiles of the Earl of Derby, 1st Baron Stanley of Preston (1841-1908) and his wife, Constance, Countess of Derby, née Villiers; the back features the coat of arms of the Earl of Derby.
