Unveiling of the memorial in honor of John J. C. Abbott, 1936

Maude Abbott wanted to make this commemoration an official but convivial occasion. Governor General of Canada Lord Tweedsmuir, former Canadian prime minister Arthur Meighen, Member of Parliament for Argenteuil Sir George Perley, Member of Parliament for St. James Fernand Rinfret, McGill University chancellor Sir Edward Beatty, Bank of Montreal president Sir Charles Gordon, and Bishop’s University chancellor Fred E. Meredith, were among the guests present in St. Andrews. « Luncheon was served and given by Arthur Abbott who supplied his caterer and waiters and it was served at my grandfather’s family table. We sat down 16. »
The photo shows Maude Abbott accompanied by the Governor General and Mrs. G.F.W. Kuhreig of the Historical Society of Argenteuil County.
« Lord Tweedsmuir’s address at the church was very charming, indeed he charmed everyone with everything he did. »
Author John Buchan (1875-1940) became the 1st Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield. The British statesman served as the fifteenth governor general of Canada from 1935 to 1940.
