Adams Mine officially opened in 1963 and brought hundreds of new mining jobs to the Kirkland Lake area over the next three decades. Unlike the hard rock gold mining of the area, the iron ore was extracted using open pit methods with heavy aboveground equipment.
The mine closed in 1990 when the ore was depleted. The closure of this and another regional mine created more economic hardship for people of the Kirkland Lake area.
