The New Penelope and Its Era (1965-1970)

In bustling 1960s downtown Montreal, a modest, underground concert venue became popular with the hip youth of the day: it was The New Penelope…

The New Penelope was the first Montreal concert venue to present important blues, rock, folk and jazz musicians in the 1960s. It hosted concerts by artists such as Muddy Waters, Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, and Jesse Winchester. The New Penelope became a beloved hangout for young people. The club was located in the district that was once called Village du Carré Saint-Louis, sometimes referred to today as Milton-Park. This is where the city’s new counterculture and arts scene were emerging.

Despite the club only being open for a short time, it is legendary in Montreal’s nightlife and music history. Years later, many people still vividly remember the excitement of seeing shows there.

Now, over 50 years since The New Penelope closed for good, the time has come to tell its story and to reflect on its legacy. This online exhibit is a labour of love carried out by ARCMTL. The project is supported by the wider community of The New Penelope’s friends and fans.
