40th Season Programme

The 1990’s saw the NSO secure a significant partnership with Brock University, due to the relocation of many concerts. Members of the orchestra continued to teach in the university music department and offer masterclasses, deepening the connection between the symphony and the university and providing substantial financial support.

In 1988/89, a “Carpet Concerts” children’s series was launched. This series filled the void of the missing children’s concerts that were once presented. The concerts featured various groups of musicians from the orchestra, highlighting individual instrument and focusing on appealing repertoire.

The POPS! Concerts (which Seagram’s sponsored for a period) were again used to audition new conductors. Mr. Florio stated his intention to step down as music director at the end of the 88/89 season. However, by the end of the season he asked to be included as a candidate for Music Director. The auditions proved inconclusive, and the board unanimously approved a motion to reinstate him for another 5 years. With this 5-year timeline, Mr. Florio hoped to establish a residency program to assist the association. Following this, Mr. Florio and Mr. Fusco announced the hiring of Mr. Robert Cooper as Choral Director and Conductor.

James Vincent Fusco maintained his position as composer-in-residence until 1994, creating several new works for the symphony.  And the orchestra welcomed such renowned guest artists as tenor Benjamin Butterfield and cellist Ofra Harnoy.

The Designer’s Showcase continued as a major fundraising activity for the organization.

Michael Reason took over the baton in 1995.
