Layers of History

If you look carefully at the photo of this rock wall, you should be able to see the lines on the surface of the rock.
These lines represent strata, layers of sedimentary rock that are formed as layers of sediment are deposited, then compressed and solidified over millions of years.
When organisms die and are quickly buried in this sediment, they’re also compressed and, if they’re lucky, end up as fossils.
