Construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road began in 1862 and continued until 1865. It spanned roughly 650 kilometers, providing a route from Fort Yale to Barkerville. Two of the most trying stretches were completed by the Royal Engineers. The first was from Yale to Boston Bar and the second was in the area of Cook’s Ferry, where Jackman was when notice of disbandment came.
