Until the early 1950s, it was possible to cross the river on a barge. Although the construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, combined with the rise of maritime traffic, gradually rendered this way of crossing the river obsolete, some stubborn sailors still found ways to circumvent the ban until the construction of the bridge-tunnel.
