Loraine “Ginger” Baines (nee Edwards) is the daughter of legendary skier and coach Ches Edwards and Phyllis Edwards. Ginger moved with her parents to Rossland from Banff, AB in 1943 so Ches could coach skiers through the Trail Ski Club. At a time when most coaching and racing focused on male competitors, Ginger was a strong ski racer winning many competitions at the junior and senior level. Ginger also won the Dominion Ski Championships many years in a row. In 1960-61, Ginger trained in Europe, and was a member of the Canadian National Ski Team from 1958-1962. When Ginger retired from skiing, she returned to Rossland to start her career and raise a family with her husband, Winston.
