Born January 19, 1910, Ches Edwards started skiing at a young age. At five years old, he became interested in ski-jumping after watching a group of Norwegians perform spectacular jumps at the 1915 Banff Winter Carnival. The sport thrilled him. He competed in ski-jumping throughout the west, briefly holding the world junior record by jumping 181 feet in Revelstoke. Despite being a good competitor, Edwards transitioned to coaching skiing in 1932. By 1937, he was teaching at the Toronto Ski Club, the world’s largest local ski club.
