Laurentide Pulp Company — A Top Performer
Appartenance Mauricie Société d’histoire régionale, Laurentide Fonds
This photo, taken around 1990, shows the size of the mill’s facilities as well as its wood supply.
Beginning its operations in 1888, the Laurentide plant was a major industrial complex in the Grand-Mère sector. This site was chosen due to its proximity to a waterfall in order to supply energy to the plant; to a railway for transporting paper; and to the forest, which had an abundance of black spruce. Between 1899 and 1919, Laurentide was the leading producer of paper in Canada.
