Mario Genois — Saint-Maurice River Expert
Mario Genois, 2018
Fishing guide Mario Genois, who has been specializing in fishing on the Saint-Maurice since 2013, organizes excursions on various bodies of water in the region, where he mainly fishes for walleye.
The fish that live in the river come from the Gouin Reservoir, a habitat of choice for several species, including yellow walleye. There are also muskellunge, pike, bass, yellow perch, catfish, pumpkinseed and flying squid.
Mr. Genois even recalls having fished two legendary blue walleye in the Saint-Maurice. His technique for catching such beautiful fish is to use a bait walker:
It’s a sinker with a pin that reaches the bottom of a body of water. (…) It tickles the bottom. When you pass the walker over sand, rock or mud, you can feel it scratching the bottom. You must have the least amount of rope out of the water. My technique is very precise. (…) To be able to feel the bottom, you can close your eyes. It’s the bottom that communicates with your hand. It takes the right line, the right rod, the right trolling speed, and the right sinker.
