Shawinigan Chemicals, resulting from the merger of several companies in 1927, was considered one of the largest complexes in America in the 1950s. The company had over 1,200 employees.
The plant discharged lime, a residue from production that spreads its whitish colour over hundreds of metres, into the Saint-Maurice River.
