Plage-Laval, from Beach to Municipality in Four Years!

Centre d’archives de Laval, P79 Fonds Germain Beauchamp, Patio & Beach, Laval West, P79/A01,019, circa 1940
The western part of the parish of Sainte-Rose was mostly farmland until the 1920s. Real estate development in the region began in the early 20th century with resort projects. The area dubbed Plage-Laval [Laval Beach] became the new destination of choice for Montreal holidaymakers. In 1929, a number of houses were owned by residents who had come together under the Association des propriétaires de Plage-Laval. The promoters granted the association all of the properties for the cost of $1 if they promised to create an independent municipality, Sainte-Rose. That was done on May 21, 1930.
