Summer Camp
Centre d’archives de Laval, P79 Fonds Germain Beauchamp, Camp Gauthier, Barbe Beach, Ste-Rose West, P79/A01,109, circa 1945.
Groups of small cottages and summer houses for rent were built on the island. They were rented by holidaymakers who could not afford to buy their own property. A restaurant was often built nearby to serve the cottagers. In the 1950s, a lot of the beaches were closed because of pollution. The cabins were then put up for sale due to the lack of tourists. When the Laurentian Highway was built a few years later, the workers bought them cheap. Their families enjoyed decent housing in a calm and pleasant environment not far from their work in the city. The cost of gas and the traffic were not what they are today.
