Miner’s Equipment

As working in underground mines is particularly hazardous, miners must use the proper safety equipment. On the top left, there is a boiled leather helmet that was used in the very beginning of Noranda’s mining operations. These helmets were replaced in the 1940s by fibreglass helmets which are more sturdy. The leather holder on the front of the helmet is to insert a lamp. Carbide lamps were used in Abitibi’s mine (you can see one on the photo). They were replaced with electric lamps. You can also see meshed goggles to protect the miners’ eyes from rock chips.
