The construction of the smelter started in June 1926 on the Horne mine location. About 600 workers, many of whom helped build the Ontario railroad, were gathered there. At the time, power was provided by wood-fired boilers. It was not until December 1926 that the Rouyn township was powered by the Northern Canada Power Company power system.
